Employers can make Florida workplaces more inclusive

Disabled individuals in Florida have the right to work and earn a living for themselves, but depending on the nature of their disability, they may need help from their employers. Business owners and employers are required by law to provide certain accommodations to individuals who have disabilities. In addition to providing the basic requirements, it is also beneficial for employers to consider how they can make their business more inclusive and accessible.

Accessibility is one of the major issues for disabled individuals in the workplace. For example, those in wheelchairs may have problems getting in and out of the door if it’s too narrow, or they may not be able to use the restroom in its current configuration. Physical needs are just one aspect of providing accommodations. It can be helpful for companies to provide disability inclusion training on a regular basis.

Disabled individuals may also need accommodations regarding technology and how they use it in their jobs. Regular audits and assessments can reveal where adjustments and updates may be necessary. Of course, working closely with those with disabilities will provide insight into what changes are needed and how improvement can make the workplace a better place for those with disabilities.

Florida workplaces should strive to be more inclusive and accommodating for individuals with disabilities. Discrimination can come in many forms, including the lack of reasonable and necessary accommodations for those who need them. When an employer acts in a discriminatory manner, it could be grounds for a civil claim. Those who believe they are victims of discrimination will find it helpful to seek legal counsel as soon as possible.
