Fighting disability discrimination in a Florida workplace

On Behalf of | Jun 3, 2020 | Workplace Disability Discrimination

Disabled individuals can face unique challenges in the workplace. Even though individuals with an intellectual disability may be able to complete the requirements of their jobs, it can still be the reason why some experience mistreatment, harassment and discrimination in their place of work. Disability discrimination comes in many forms, and victims have the right to speak out. Co-workers can also take steps to fight this type of mistreatment, as can Florida employers.

Those with intellectual disabilities can experience discrimination in many ways. They may be excluded socially, and they may not be offered opportunities for advancement, even if they are capable of doing the tasks required. Disabled individuals also have the right to certain types of accommodations and assistance, yet employers may not be willing or have the ability to connect workers with the resources they need. Unfortunately, victims of these types of exclusions may feel uncomfortable about what they are experiencing.

One of the most important steps in preventing and fighting this type of discrimination in the workplace is building an inclusive workplace culture. This means helping disabled workers feel valued and providing support they may need to do their jobs safely. It also means employers cannot tolerate any type of mistreatment against those with disabilities.

Disability discrimination is unacceptable in any workplace. Intellectually disabled individuals who experience discriminatory treatment or harassment have the right to hold responsible parties accountable. Victims and family members may find it helpful to reach out to an experienced Florida legal professional regarding the legal options available to them, including the potential for a civil claim.
