Former manager sues Amazon over discrimination claims

Workers in Florida and across the U.S. are legally protected from on-the-job discrimination and retaliation. However, many employers still attempt to engage in such activities. For example, a former Amazon manager is suing the online retail giant for allegedly making her discriminate against job applicants and then firing her when she protested.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed in the Superior Court of California in Alameda County on Feb. 24, the 38-year-old plaintiff began working as a loss prevention manager at Amazon in July 2018. Around five months later, she was promoted to regional manager. At that point, her supervisor allegedly told her to start looking up the social media profiles of job candidates to determine their gender, race and ethnicity. In September of 2018, she submitted a written complaint that expressed her discomfort with the practice, which she believed to be illegal. She also complained that she was paid significantly less than her male colleagues for doing the same work. In Nov. 2018, Amazon terminated her from her position and allegedly told her that her complaints were a major reason for her firing. She was also allegedly told that male workers make more than female workers at Amazon "all the time."

The plaintiff is suing Amazon for wrongful termination, retaliation, failure to prevent discrimination in violation of California's labor code and violation of the California Equal Pay Act. She is seeking unspecified damages.

Florida workers who experience on-the-job discrimination or wrongful dismissal might need Boca Raton, Florida, wrongful termination legal assistance. After assessing the case, an attorney might recommend filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which may lead to a settlement that offers compensation for back pay, lost benefits, mental anguish and other losses.
