There is no place for handicap discrimination

There are federal and Florida state laws in place to protect employees and applicants with a handicap. It doesn’t matter if you have a physical or mental handicap, nothing changes the fact that you should be treated the same as everybody else at a place of employment.

For example, did you know you have a right to reasonable accommodations? If your employer refuses, this can be considered an act of handicap discrimination.

Employers have the responsibility for making reasonable accommodations if a person has a disability. Both sides should work together to find a solution that is agreeable.

Many years ago, you had to prove that your employer was aware of and fully understood your disability. However, this is no longer the case since the passing of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

There are companies that understand how to hire and work with somebody who has a handicap. And then there are those who want nothing to do with this. If they find themselves working with a handicapped individual, they may begin to take steps in order to force the person out. This is illegal behavior that should be treated as such.

Even in today’s world, even though things have changed for the better in terms of how handicapped individuals are treated, there is still trouble out there. If you or a loved one has been the victim of handicap discrimination, don’t hesitate to reach out to us online or via phone. You can also learn more about this subject matter on our website and blog. Regardless of your situation, you deserve to be treated with respect.
