As an employee, there may come a point when you consider the benefits of leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. This may not be something you want to do, but it is nice to know that it is available to you.
This type of leave entitles you to up to 12 weeks away from work to care for a family or medical emergency. However, you cannot take this leave for just any reason. Only certain types of family and medical emergencies qualify.
Here are three events that often trigger FMLA leave:
— The birth of a child. This also includes bringing a child into your home via foster care or adoption.
— Caring for a family member dealing with a serious health condition, such as cancer.
— Taking care of a health condition that prevents you from performing all of your job responsibilities.
If you believe you qualify for FMLA leave, it is important to learn more about your particular situation. For example, the birth of a child is one of the most common reasons for a leave. Both mothers and fathers will qualify for time off under the act.
There are many reasons for FMLA leave, and you need to know the ins and outs of each one. This will allow you to take advantage in the event that the time comes.
If for any reason your employer does not comply with your request, you will want to learn more about their stance. There may come a point when you need to file a complaint to ensure that your FMLA leave is approved.
