Identifying a hostile environment, dealing with the situation

When you arrive at work, regardless of the time, you expect to do your job without being treated poorly. Unfortunately, some people’s expectations do not match reality. Instead, they are subjected to a hostile work environment for one reason or another.

In Florida, for example, every employer is required to provide a safe work environment for its employees, regardless of gender, age, race, color, disability, religion, or other protected class.

A hostile workplace can cause a variety of problems, and not just for the victim. This can impact other workers as well, as it makes for an environment that is challenging to work in.

There are many examples of a hostile workplace, including but not limited to a person who is sexually harassed, a person who is bullied for being disabled, and retaliation in relation to reporting a violation or making a workers’ compensation claim.

If a people have been victims of harassment or subjected to a hostile workplace, they should start by speaking with their supervisor or human resources department. In some cases, but not always, this is enough to put an end to the issue once and for all. Other times, however, this only makes things worse.
