Parents and sexual harassment in schools

It doesn’t matter if you are one of our Florida readers or live in another part of the country, you know that sexual harassment in schools should never be tolerated. Not only does this have a negative impact on the student who is being harassed, but it can also affect the school.

As a parent, you should be aware of the fact that sexual harassment is always a possibility. This is not common, but there are times when students are put in this position.

The first thing you should do is ask your child for more information, such as who is involved, when and how often the harassment takes place, and where it has occurred in the past. From there, learn more about the school’s sexual harassment policy. Finally, it is time to speak with the principal and/or another member of the faculty.

While some schools have taken steps in an attempt to prevent sexual harassment, this is not the case for all institutions. A handbook is the best way to protect against this, as it gives the school the opportunity to draft a policy, provide rules and remedies, and outline what is considered sexual harassment.

Parents that hear their child is being sexually harassed will be upset on many different levels. If you are in this position, it is important to keep a level head. This will allow you to get to the bottom of the problem in a fast and efficient manner. Once you speak with the principal, you will have an idea of what to do next. If you do not get the answers you need, an attorney may be able to provide more information.
