Recognizing LGBT discrimination in the workplace

Every Florida employee has the right to work in an environment that is free from discriminatory and unfair treatment. Unfortunately, employers often treat workers differently due to their perceived sexual orientation. LGBT discrimination can take many forms, and victims may not be certain of their rights or what to do next if they experience it in their workplace. It can be helpful to know how to spot this type of discrimination and how to fight back. 

This type of discrimination can take many forms. It happens when an employee experiences any type of unfair or inappropriate treatment due to sexual orientation. It is possible this may happen at any stage of the employment process. A person may not get hired for a position for which he or she is well-qualified, or an employee may be fired unfairly. Promotions, training and advancement opportunities may be offered to others, but not an individual who identifies as LGBT.

In other cases, LGBT discrimination can take place in more direct forms. Verbal harassment is is unacceptable, including making inappropriate comments or jokes. Direct threats or passive aggressive comments can make a victim feel that it is impossible to speak out about what he or she is experiencing for fear of retaliation.

LGBT discrimination is unacceptable in any form. If a Florida employee thinks this is happening to him or her, it may be helpful to speak with an experienced attorney regarding the legal options available. An employer should be held accountable for his or her own inappropriate actions as well as the actions of employees.
