Former CBS exec alleges racial discrimination

Workers in Florida continue to suffer discrimination on the job, even decades after civil rights laws went into effect. Workplace discrimination can even affect high-ranking executives and other professionals in top decision-making positions. One former executive at CBS television network filed a lawsuit against his former employer, accusing the company of firing him for discriminatory reasons. The former reality TV executive, a man of Japanese descent, says that non-white executives at the network were systematically mistreated on the job. Prior to his dismissal, he served as senior executive vice president for alternative programming.

In his complaint, the former executive said that the network has vowed to increase its diversity. Still, he says, the highest ranks of the company are occupied exclusively by white males. He said that he was hired in 2016 after working at the network on two previous occasions. As part of his work, he launched several major reality TV programs for CBS, including "The Amazing Race" and "Survivor." He said that he was often the only non-white person in the room at executive meetings and that when other people of color were present, they were members of support staff and sat in the back.

After the CEO who hired him left his position, he says that he was targeted for dismissal. He says that a female coworker's complaint that he did not listen to her was taken seriously when there was little evidence to back it up and that CBS used it as a pretext to dismiss him. He says that both race and age discrimination were involved in his dismissal.

Employment discrimination can hold back the careers of even highly successful individuals, costing them thousands or millions of dollars.
