Dell settles discrimination case for $7 million

Florida readers might be interested to learn that Dell Technologies has agreed to settle a workplace discrimination lawsuit for $7 million. The deal was announced by the U.S. Department of Labor on Sept. 30.

According to media reports, Texas-based Dell will offer $7 million in lost wages, interest and benefits to workers who claimed they were discriminated against due to their race and gender. That amount includes $1.5 million the company voluntary paid to employees back in 2012. In addition to the settlement, Dell committed to ensuring that all its employees were given equal employment opportunities. However, the tech maker denied all liability in the case.

The agency says that the settlement resolves 20 compliance evaluations that had been outstanding against Dell. In a statement, the company said that it "prides itself" on its record of wage equity and diversity. It also pointed out that it volunteered to work with the federal government to settle the matter. The settlement, which is one of the largest ever collected by the Labor Department, was one of two major discrimination resolutions announced at the end of September. In the other, Goldman Sachs agreed to pay approximately $10 million to settle pay discrimination claims involving 600 workers employed at the financial service firm's New York headquarters.
