Sexual harassment in schools is frequent

There are schools from one side of the country to the next, all of which are dedicated to helping students better their level of education. According to a recent research study by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, however, at least one out of four middle school students noted that they have experienced some type of physical or verbal sexual harassment at their school. This often occurs in the hallway or the classroom.

The research study surveyed approximately 1,400 students spanning four middle schools. The end result was alarming: 27 percent of female students said they had been a victim of physical or verbal sexual harassment, with male students not far behind at 25 percent.

Nearly 22 percent of students said that they were a victim of unwanted physical touching, with verbal sexual commentary also a big problem with 18.9 percent of students a victim.

The head investigator of the study added that, "Hallways made sense. Even the gym made sense. The classroom was very surprising to our team."

Although this study only included 1,400 students, it shows that sexual harassment in schools remains a major problem, both among female and male students.

When a student is sexually harassed at school, regardless of the other party, they do not always realize they have rights. This is particularly true among younger students, such as those in middle school.

Administrations across the country are aware of this growing problem, but this doesn't mean they are aware of everything that goes on in their school. If a student is sexually harassed, he or she should report the problem. In some cases, this even leads to a lawsuit filed by the victim.
